tears & Darwin

6/30/2024

Many animals with eyes produce tears, but only one releases them in moments of sorrow and joy: humans. We are a biological anomaly for being able to stream tears down the face during an emotional upheaval or when laughing. Charles Darwin considered tears to have no real benefit, which is another reason to consider him an anomaly.

Case
SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES
CITY OF GRANTS PASS, OREGON v. JOHNSON ET AL., ON BEHALF OF THEMSELVES AND ALL OTHERS SIMILARLY SITUATED CERTIORARI TO THE UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE NINTH CIRCUIT No. 23–175. Argued April 22, 2024—Decided June 28, 2024

City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, 603 U.S. ___ (2024), is a United States Supreme Court case in which the Court held that local government ordinances with civil and criminal penalties for camping on public land do not constitute cruel and unusual punishment of homeless people.

US Constitution
Eighth Amendment
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
This amendment was adopted on December 15, 1791, along with the rest of the United States Bill of Rights.
The Bill of Rights is the first
10 Amendments to the Constitution.
There are 27 amendments.

The sentence structure of the Eighth is parallelism, and the placement of verbs at the end of phrases, as in Latin, adds force.

The vampire finch of the Galapagos Islands has a taste for blood. The victim is the booby bird, which surprisingly doesn’t seem to mind being a meal. In fact, the booby often sits patiently as a queue of vampire finches wait to drink.
I submit my nomination of teenagers to replace the next finches.

Cajetan heretical pope

6/29/2024

Thomas Cajetan, OP (1469-1534) was an Italian philosopher, theologian, Master of the Order of Preachers 1508 to 1518, and cardinal from 1517 until his death. He was a leading theologian of his day. He wrote an extensive commentary on the Summa Theologica (St. Thomas Aquinas).
…
Against the Council of Pisa's advocacy of conciliarism, which placed the authority of a general council above the pope’s authority, Cajetan responded that a general council could only judge a pope if the pope had become a heretic.

In the case of a wicked but non-heretical pope, Cajetan insisted that resistance is sufficient to reduce abuses, while deposition is inadmissible as a council convened without a pope would be “headless” (using the scriptural analogy of the relationship between sheep and their shepherd).

In the case of heresy, however, Cajetan wrote that an exceptional general council could be convened to grant the reigning pope a fair hearing, and if he was judged to be in heresy, the council could act to sever the bond between the man holding the papacy and the office itself.

However, he denied that this action constituted the council acting over the pope, which he regarded as theologically impossible. Rather, he considered that such an action merely indicated that the council could undo the election of that particular man to the office of the pope (since the election was also performed by human beings).

Cajetan, building on similar discussions from John of Paris and Augustinus Triumphus regarding the removal of heretical popes, interpreted Titus 3:10 as saying that a heretical pope should be deposed after two admonitions.

Vigano is not a sedevacantist, nor am I. It is time to implement Cajetan. The division caused by the New Mass has had an impact on us all.

My friend Josh and I think that the nails must have been pried out of the cross with His hands and feet still attached. His Blood had been drained when the Roman soldier pierced His side. I count five men lifting, lowering, pulling in a bloodless rendering. The Sacrifice of the Mass is unbloody.

Alioto's and Castagnola's in Fisherman's Wharf (100-year presences) are closed permanently. McDonald's in Stonestown (30-year presence) closed. The minimum wage in California increased to $20 per hour on April 1, 2024, signed into law by Newsom. He and San Francisco politicians are killing the economy, but his PlumpJack Wine & Spirits stores in two SF locations are doing just fine.
If, if someone goes there half-drunk, asks to taste some hard liquors, gets more drunk, throws up all over the bottles and the floor, and 9-1-1 is called, I guarantee the SFPD dispatcher will say, "File a police report. Good-bye."

With the addition of the expanded freshman class, assisting nearly 70 percent of [Thomas Aquinas College] TAC families who require financial aid will cost close to $8.3 million for the upcoming year. And because TAC does not accept any direct government funding — to preserve our institutional autonomy — we depend entirely on the generosity of our friends….” You heard that right. Students at the four-year college in SoCal take out no government loans.

the School Chapel

I attended a school with 34 Jesuits and a chapel inside the building. We did not have to leave for Mass or confession. The life of the all-boys school was what a Catholic school education was meant to be: faith-infused.
Catholic homeschooling has grown because of the absence of traditional religious, or any religious, in the schools. Homeschooling is not the same thing, and lay teachers are not religious. Some of them might not even know what a religious is. Catholic education today is lamentable, and tradition-minded orders need to dominate this greatest apostolate again. That chapel was demolished when a new school was built, and the present, co-ed school has one Jesuit.

Anatomy of a Murder

Frederick Manion, an army lieutenant, is arrested for the murder of a bartender, Barney Quill. The courtroom drama stars James Stewart and a bunch of other winners. The drama is based on a novel written by a state supreme court justice who based his story on a case in which he was defense attorney. I recommend the movie but saying why would spoil things.

'trans' for minors

6/25/2024

Opinion
The entire 'trans crusade' is about sex.
Adults who are involved in the 'trans crusade' for minors are sexualizing children, that is, encouraging minors to fantasize or even participate in activities of the sexual kind.
This very public platform, which has been exposed, is intertwined with adults who have an immediate connection to minors, such as medical personnel, teachers, legal or non-legal advocates, lawmakers, and parents or guardians.
My opinion conforms with Catholic moral teaching, but those who do not accept that teaching could reach the same conclusion on the basis of the natural law. Thomas Aquinas has something to say about natural law, and I think he is the foremost philosopher of the last 2,000 years, perhaps of all time.
The first Question of the
Summa considers the very existence and nature of God and as the source of natural law: God first in His own inner and Trinitarian life, and then in His external activity. He gives existence to creatures and ordains them to perfection or full realization for the manifestation or communication of His own glory.
What is particular to Catholics is that we see the glory governing all people and eternally manifested in Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, three persons truly distinct from one another, yet One. I recommend that all people consider the "trans crusade" in the light of natural law.

France denied

The Superior of the Missionaries of Divine Mercy in France has asked for intense prayers. The Vatican blocked ordinations because they are Latin Mass seminarians. Dom Alcuin Reid of San Benoit Monastery in France was denied ordination at the last minute, too, but he found a bishop, still unidentified for a reason, who would ordain him.

Jonathan Gullis, Member of Parliament, Stoke-on-Trent North
The left wants to destroy Western Civilization, which means all of civilization, the core of which was formed in Europe by the Catholic Church and passed on to, by, and for the benefit of every breed and creed of man: law, medicine, science, mathematics, philosophy, music, art, literature, culture, and, yes, theology...and pretzels.
No! Resist! And be polite to children.

not the loudest sound ever recorded, but up there
Apollo X1
Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC, and Armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon's surface six hours and 39 minutes later, on July 21 at 02:56 UTC, all broadcast on American television. Time was 17:56 PST in San Francisco and the entire West Coast, USA.
UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time, a standard used to set all time zones around the world. So, for instance, New York City is in the time zone UTC minus five, meaning that it is 5 hours earlier in NYC than the reading on a UTC clock (except during U.S. daylight savings, when it is 4 hours earlier).
The Space Shuttle is a retired, partially reusable, low Earth orbital spacecraft system operated from 1981 to 2011 by NASA. The prime landing site was the Shuttle Landing Facility at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, a purpose-built landing strip. Landings also occurred at Edwards Air Force Base in California, and one took place at White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico.

Modern Times

I showed the film, Modern Times, to a high school class, and one boy started laughing hysterically, which made me laugh harder. I had previewed it, but it wasn't until class that I really enjoyed it. Some pictures are a group experience.
Siblings and friends, and I estimate 100 boys from the neighborhood, school, and sports, were physical with one another, and the only weapons we had were appendages. Loss of spontaneity is what accounts for so much isolation today.

The choke point continues to be abortion. The Catholic Church must tell all Catholics that they are forbidden to vote in favor of any candidate who supports abortion, and the Church must excommunicate all abortion supporters who win. Will that happen? No. It's a failure from the top down. It's a simple proposition: you either walk with Our Lord or you don't.
