John Muir b. 1838 Scotland d. 1914 Los Angeles From Wikipedia – “In 1880, after he returned from a trip to Alaska, Muir and Strentzel married. John Muir went into partnership with his father-in-law, John Strentzel, and for ten years directed most of his energy into managing this large fruit farm. “Although Muir was a loyal, dedicated husband and father of two daughters, ‘his heart remained wild’, writes Marquis. His wife understood his needs, and after seeing his restlessness at the ranch, would sometimes ‘shoo him back up’ to the mountains. He sometimes took his daughters with him.” As I wrote in Sweet under the More Tab, a man named John McLaren, who was a friend of John Muir, gave my dad his first and only career. McLaren was born 1846 Scotland and died 1943 San Francisco. He created Golden Gate Park. I have it firsthand: McLaren did not like any buildings or statues in the Park and tried to hide them with hedges. From the balcony of McLaren Lodge, he gave my dad his first raise. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McLaren_(horticulturist) Mount Muir, 14,018 ft (4,273 m) — Eastern Sierra peak near Mount Whitney, within Sequoia National Park and the John Muir Wilderness. “Leftwing nonprofits across the country have undergone similar transformations. From the Sierra Club to the Guttmacher Institute to the American Civil Liberties Union, the Intercept’s Ryan Grim reported last month, progressive advocacy groups have ‘effectively ceased to function,’ as their outward-facing missions fall prey to internal tumult.” Find the English in the Latin. The way the Holy Ghost found me was through the love of my parents. That love proceeded forth from them to me…and was returned. The love was more than internal, not merely residing in each one of us separately. It was something external, invisible, but present. Painting by Jean II Restout, 1692 – 1768, born Rouen.

It is a ligature of “et”, Latin for “and”. What is a ligature? In writing and typography, which is setting type, a ligature is a smash-up of two letters to form a single letter. Here is what the et looks like as a ligature. One can see the formation of &. courtesy of reddit.com

“Another surprising development in the history of the pencil took place in the United States in the 1840s. While working at his father’s pencil factory, transcendentalist writer and philosopher Henry David Thoreau — best known as the author of Walden, a landmark series of essays on self-reliance — helped conceive of a new numbering system to describe the lightness and darkness, as well as the hardness and softness, of a pencil’s graphite. Labeled from numbers one to four, this new notation system took off nationwide, and the now-beloved No. 2 pencil became most popular due to the perfect balance of those qualities.” I use #2 only. final letter written January 7, 1536
My most dear lord, king and husband, The hour of my death now drawing on, the tender love I owe you forceth me, my case being such, to commend myself to you, and to put you in remembrance with a few words of the health and safeguard of your soul which you ought to prefer before all worldly matters, and before the care and pampering of your body, for the which you have cast me into many calamities and yourself into many troubles. For my part, I pardon you everything, and I wish to devoutly pray God that He will pardon you also. For the rest, I commend unto you our daughter Mary, beseeching you to be a good father unto her, as I have heretofore desired. I entreat you also, on behalf of my maids, to give them marriage portions, which is not much, they being but three. For all my other servants I solicit the wages due them, and a year more, lest they be unprovided for. Lastly, I make this vow, that mine eyes desire you above all things. Katharine the Quene. Supervising teachers guide homeschooling students, and there are many programs to choose from with thousands of enrolled students.
Parents I know use Mother of Divine Grace School, with over 6,300 American and international students, and some use Seton Home Study School, both accredited. The student I tutor is enrolled in a charter school. Universities accept homeschoolers. https://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/ps/homeschool.asp If you want war, prepare for war,

A non-Catholic gave me the film, The Chosen. I put it on the bookshelf. Today, I was alerted to its flaw. In this clip, Mary says about Our Lord, “He doesn’t need me anymore.” This is heresy. When I saw the title of the clip, as if His birth were a mere remembrance, I knew there was something wrong. Toss it out. The woman who gave me the film passes out her tracts. I have never said an unkind word to her. When I showed her my Missal, she asked if the Bible was in it. What did she think was in it? I know how Chopin felt, in need of air.
In saecula saeculorum explained –
Saecula Saaeculum is a second declension noun, usually the accusative case saecula following a preposition, and meaning race, breed, generation, lifetime. Saeculorum Saeculorum is the genitive plural of saeculum. The genitive case is the Latin grammatical case of possession that marks a noun as being the possessor of another noun. For example, discupuli servorum means “servants’ disciples”. Civil use According to the calculation of the Etruscans, which was adopted by the Romans, a saeculum was a space of time containing 110 lunar years. Liturgical use The phrase “unto the ages of ages” expresses either the idea of eternity or an indeterminate number of aeons. The phrase is a translation of the original Koine Greek phrase “εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων”, in the Latin alphabet “eis toùs aionas ton aiṓnōn”. The phrase occurs in the original Greek texts of the New Testament. In the Latin Vulgate, the phrase is translated as “in saecula saeculorum” and in the English Douay Rheims as “world without end”. As Wikipedia points out, “For over a thousand years (c. AD 400–1530), the Vulgate was the most commonly used edition of the most influential text in Western European society.” Neither you nor I did any of the hard work. Possessive Adjectives
Which is correct?
Because “asking” is a gerund, which is a verb used as a noun, “my asking” is correct. In this instance, “my” is a possessive adjective modifying “asking”, the noun. Reminder: his, her, its, my, your, and their are possessive adjectives or pronouns. A way to get around uncertainty when writing is to rewrite a sentence. For example, “If you don’t mind, may I ask you a question?” However, one cannot get around a grammar question on a test! The submission of civil authority to the Roman Catholic Church and their separate, peaceful, and mutually beneficial coexistence is what I have always, albeit secretly, believed to be best.
Surge, vade; quia fides tua te salvum fecit. Arise, go thy way; for thy faith hath made thee whole.
This is the last line of today’s Gospel, Luke 17, 11-19, about the ten lepers. Christ cures them, but only one of them, a Samaritan, returns and thanks Him. Why this sentence? Surge: verb, arise. You’ve heard the English word, “surge”, a verb meaning “to move forward”. Salvum: adjective, saved. I picked this sentence to show what translators do. Salvum is translated as “whole”. To be saved is to be whole. Fides: noun, faith. You’ve heard the US Marine Corps motto, Semper Fidelis, which means “Always Faithful”, and you’ve heard of bona fides, meaning good faith. This fast-moving video shows when classical and vulgar Latin appeared and their Romance offspring debuted. The start is 1200 BC, descending calendar years follow, a breakthrough occurs at a most high date, then calendar years start advancing. Noteworthy is the influence of Latin (medieval, renaissance, new) on English and German. All the while, Latin remained the official language of the Church, and so it is still today and for good reason. Otherwise, there is babble and exclusion. I cannot go to a Spanish Mass, but I can go a Latin Mass anywhere and be with everybody. |
