What is white-tie? White-Tie is the most formal attire possible. All women wear a formal, floor-length evening gown with jewelry and heels and carry a clutch. All men wear a black tuxedo with tails, formal white shirt, white vest, white bow tie, white or gray gloves, and polished footwear. No exceptions.

I think, "White tie" means, You should wear tails, a white vest, and, uhm, a white tie (this was the most formal outfit, also to be worn, even today, at the Vienna Opera Ball), whereas "Black tie" means tux and, well, black tie. Waiters in high end restaurants had a black tie and tails, and when visiting the Pope, the dress code demanded tails and a BLACK vest. Almost nobody confirms to this rules today, but Donald Trump really wore a black vest together with his tails, when he visited Pope Francis a few years ago...

Thank you, Joe. There used to be high-end restaurants in San Fran where the waiters wore tuxedos. I knew one of the waiters. He was a neighbor of my parents. Maybe in a day or two I will think of the name of the restaurant. It is long-gone. Bobby
