There is a fascinating style of slightly modern sacral music, which seems to me especially unique to French culture, somehow influenced by Gregorian, I experienced this for the first time with the film music ("Les rogationes") for the movie "An Heiligen Wassern", dealing with the hard life in a small Swiss Alpine village.
