San Francisco, California Uncle John was on duty at this time. He was a hero to many and never killed anyone. I based the novel and short stories on my uncle. Fleishhacker Pool was cold salt water pumped in from the ocean. Al Capone was incarcerated at Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary from 1934 to 1939. He was transferred there after a period of privileged treatment in other prisons, where he had access to amenities and guards on his payroll. At Alcatraz, however, Capone was denied these privileges and lived cold prison life. It was full in 1959, and no one ever escaped. There's more to this episode than a few good shots of the city. Do you know what "ambivalent" means? I doubt very many people of the time did. Other than those in the system, the general public was serially innocent.
