1778-1782: the French government sends supplies, arms and ammunition, uniforms, and troops and naval support to the American Continental Army.
1789: the French Revolution begins and, eventually, would deny substantial freedoms to the French people.
1791: the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is enacted.
It states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The First Amendment applies to all branches of government, legislatures, courts, and executive officials and agencies and includes public employers, public university systems, and public school systems.
