1464: Francis wanted to cross the Straits of Messina to reach Sicily, but a boatman refused to take him. Francis laid his cloak on the water, tied one end to his staff to make a sail, and sailed across with his companions.

1833-39: Franz had three children with his mistress.
1862: He wrote "St. Francis Paola Walking on the Waves".
​1865: He became a Franciscan tertiary (disputed) and took the four minor orders of the Roman Catholic Church, though he never became a priest. For more than a year he did not touch the piano. During this period Liszt took an active dislike to the career of a virtuoso.
