Note: In the Spanish video, a giant monstrance is present. The float is carried by a male phalanx. Hundreds and hundreds of artists and artisans were employed to make the cathedral, monstrance, and float, altogether one of the finest examples of national pride and faith. Carrying the float on a downward slope is difficult because all the weight shifts forward, and it is hot underneath.
Officially, the lyrics of the anthem were dropped because of liberalizing forces, sad indeed because Franco protected nation and Church from communists.
Francoist Spain’s economy grew. “The success of the stabilization program was attributable to a combination of good luck and good management and the impressive development during this period was referred to as the ‘Spanish miracle’. Between 1959 and 1974, Spain had the next fastest economic growth rate after Japan. The boom came to an end with the oil shocks of the 1970s and government instability during the transition back to democracy after Franco's death in 1975.” - Wikipedia.com.
Following is the Falangist Anthem and a look at life under the strongman. If it looks slightly Nazi, ignore that aspect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4qvZT_y2g4
In the next video, the military sings El Novio de la Muerte - Bridegroom of Death, referring to Christ and soldier alike, hymn and regimental slow march of the Spanish Legion. They have so much more class than communists … who face Hell. One of my students is traveling to Spain this coming summer. The people of Spain are handsome; the tenor is magnificent; I hope my student and his soccer team win.
