Federal
There are seven tax brackets for most ordinary income for individuals for the 2021 tax year: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%.

Federal gas tax
The federal excise tax on gas is 18.4 cents per gallon.

California
State taxes are a little more complex. An individual pays income tax, sales and use tax, property tax, and gas tax. Property tax is 1% of assessed value. These are the principal taxes.

California gas tax
The gas tax is 51.1 cents per gallon.

Combined federal and California gas tax
The combined rate, rounded, is 70 cents per gallon.

Current cost of gas nearby: $6.50 per gallon. The average cost in California is $5.88.

The distance to church is 60 miles round trip. Fuel cost of approximately $7 (depends on rate of speed), plus gas tax of approximately $.70 (depends on rate of speed), totals close to $8, and 52 weeks times $8 equals $416, excluding holy days. My estimate is $500 per year just to get to church on Sunday.

Well, I guess it is a choice worth making to hear the Latin Mass, and I paid my income tax today.

Car-free Sundays? Energy watchdog proposes it - International Energy Agency (March 2022).

Hi Joe: I hope you are closer to church, but maybe you can walk? Bobby
