Two few days ago, I said I refused to watch the Chinese theater called the Olympics. Well, now I must eat my words – not the first time. I was just informed that Eileen Gu, a freestyle skier for the Chinese team, is a classmate of one of my former students, the young lady who plays volleyball at the University of Oregon. Also, Kamila Valieva, a figure skater, is Tatar and is from Kazan. My former student and her brother (I have tutored him) are Tatar. So, I will be watching Gu and Valieva. There is tremendous controversy over Gu skiing for China, not Team USA. You can google it. I got the scoop.

Here is the YouTube link to Valieva doing two quads (there are 13-14 Tatars in the Olympics). www.youtube.com/watch?v=hda3vvmqQHQ

Putin plans to eliminate the title of president for Tatarstan:

Rudolph Nureyev was Tatar. He stated in his autobiography: “My mother was born in the beautiful ancient city of Kazan. We are Muslims. Father was born in a small village near Ufa, the capital of the Republic of Bashkiria. Thus, on both sides our relatives are Tatars and Bashkirs. I cannot define exactly what it means to me to be a Tatar, and not a Russian, but I feel this difference in myself. Our Tatar blood flows somehow faster and is always ready to boil.” Tatars became subjects of Russia after the Siege of Kazan in 1552 and were loyal warriors. “
Many noble families in the Tsardom of Russia and Russian Empire had Tatar origins.” Wikipedia.com

Gu and Valieva won gold.
