9-25-2025 Former President Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to five years in prison for a criminal conspiracy involving illegal campaign financing from the government of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. This marks his third conviction since leaving office in 2012. In this latest ruling, a Paris court sentenced Sarkozy to five years for conspiring to seek funding for his 2007 presidential campaign from Libya. Unprecedented for a modern French president, the court ruled that he must begin serving the sentence soon, regardless of his appeal.
