Community: Suspect leads SRPD on a 45-minute pursuit, terminating with the successful deployment of spike strips.
On Tuesday, August 23rd, 2022, at approximately 3:04 a.m., a Santa Rosa Police Officer was in the area of Petaluma Hill Rd and Frazier Ave. when he observed a silver Acura 2-door vehicle driving through the area with loud exhaust. The driver of the vehicle noticed the officer and attempted to turn quickly onto a side street.
The officer followed the Acura and attempted a traffic stop for the Vehicle Code violation, but the vehicle did not yield. The vehicle accelerated into the South Park Neighborhood of town and continued to evade the officer. A pursuit ensued, which covered both east and west areas of Santa Rosa. The pursuit covered several miles throughout town and lasted approximately 45 minutes. The pursuit reached speeds of approximately 100 MPH along Highway 12 and eventually extended into the northern part of Santa Rosa.
SRPD Officers attempted to set up spike strips at several locations throughout the pursuit and eventually were able to successfully spike strip the Acura near the intersection of Old Redwood Hwy and Mark West Springs Rd. The Acura then continued on for a short distance southbound with three flat tires before coming to a stop in the roadway near the 4400 block of Old Redwood Highway. The solo male driver quickly exited the vehicle and began running into a large dark field east of the location, where he jumped a large fence into a residential neighborhood.
SRPD Officers gave chase and immediately set up a perimeter around the neighborhood. It was quickly discovered that the suspect had gained entry into an unlocked rear door to a residence along Dorchester Dr. The homeowners were awakened to the suspect attempting to hide in one of their bedrooms. Officers were able to contact the suspect, along with the assistance of a Police K9, and take the suspect into custody without further incident. The suspect was found to be in possession of approximately 12 grams of suspected methamphetamine. None of the residents were injured during the incident.
The male driver was identified as Jose Hernandez, a 35-year-old Santa Rosa resident, currently on Felony Probation (PRCS), with priors for Felony evading and possession of a firearm. Hernandez was later booked into county jail for the following charges:
-3452 VC – Violation of PRCS – Felony
-2800.2(a) VC - Evading a Peace Officer - Felony
-11377(a) H&S – Possession of Methamphetamine
-459 PC – Burglary- Felony
