All photos are courtesy of the New Liturgical Movement. Masses side by side were a common sight before the new Mass of 1969 almost wiped them out. Prior, most Catholic parishes in America had 5-6 priests, now 1-2. In Ireland, which has 3.5 million Catholics, there are only 47 men at the national seminary in Maynooth, the Church of Vatican II.

I wonder if even Catholics who visit a church would ask themselves what these side alters were made for. But if You are convinced that the unbloody renewal of the sacrifice of Golgatha creates grace for the quick and the dead, then You see it as meaningful when a mass is read, even by the celebrating priest alone.
