metonic cycle

The Metonic cycle is a period of 19 years (235 lunar months), after which the new and full Moons return to the same days of the year. New Moon to new Moon is one cycle. It appears as a thin curved shape, but I think of it as the time when we cannot see the Moon. The Metonic cycle was the basis of the ancient Greek calendar and is still used for calculating movable feasts such as Easter.

Intermission -

To a world full of idiots: Easter is not a pagan holiday. In Latin, it is called Pascha; in Greek, it is called Pascha; and in French, it is called Pâques. Only in Germanic languages does the word “Easter” appear. Easter parallels the German word Ostern, of uncertain origin, but likely deriving from the Catholic designation of Easter week as in albis, a Latin phrase that was understood as the plural of alba (“dawn”) and became eostarum in Old High German. That is how eostarum begot Ostern begot Easter.

Back to math -

“The recurrence is not perfect, and by precise observation the Metonic cycle defined as 235 synodic months is just 2 hours, 4 minutes, and 58 seconds longer than 19 tropical years. Meton of Athens, in the 5th century B.C., judged the cycle to be a whole number of days, 6,940. Using these whole numbers facilitates the construction of a lunisolar calendar …  For example, by the 19-year Metonic cycle, the full moon repeats on or near Christmas Day between A.D. 1711 and A.D. 2300.” Wikipedia [slightly edited to clarify time periods]

1711 to 2300 = 589 years
589/19 (the Metonic cycle) = 31
365 days/31 = 11.7741935 (months in a year, not 12)

A question on Quora prompted me to learn what the Metonic (Meton) cycle is.

dream

I woke up this morning right after a joke that was in my dream.

Setting: woodsy area. Occasion: company picnic. Attendees: many families. Activities: food and games.

A guy stands up and shouts, “We have a relay race that’s longer than one of the bosses.”

I’m 99.99% sure I have never heard the joke before. First time I ever told one while sleeping? I think so.

What is weird is that I do so much blogging that I blog in my dreams.

I have a lot of respect for Freud, but please don't do any analysis on me. I was on the couch once for a couple of months many Moon cycles ago, and not much happened. The Moon and the stars are still out there, and though the Starship Enterprise has lost sight of Vulcan, the search continues.

mass growth

Cameron O'Hearn, producer and director of Mass of the Ages, [see More tab, Episode 3 to come] said that the movie is approaching 1.5 million views, confirmation that more and more people are leaving the Modern Mass, or are at least considering leaving, to join us in the Latin Mass, the sanctuary of recusancy and growth.

Fifty people were received into the Church at St. Stephen on Easter Vigil last. This is nothing like walking into a protestant church and saying,
“Hi, I’m here,” and everyone runs around you and says, “Welcome.” If you ever get a welcome from Catholics, you will be lucky. Catholics are oddballs with some attitude and some fortitude, which is why I fit in, but I’m not talking about those nincompoops in Washington, who
’ve got zero of everything.

Preparation to be received is a long process and requires two mother hens. We are lousy at getting people in, but if you do, pat yourself on your cape for being Clark Kent.

sspx switzerland

Starting today, I will be praying that the tributary leading out of the modern Mass “big lake” sees more and more hop on the bark. I pray that the tributary start to widen, and the sloops begin to gain speed on the waters leading to the Latin Mass “little lake”. There the craft are governed by imperfect (as we all are), but strong boatmen from the SSPX.

This beautiful SSPX church, Kirchgemeinde Sancta Maria, St. Mary Parish, is in Wil, Switzerland, not far from Zürich and a seven-hour drive from Vienna. Gaze at a unique view of the tabernacle, and notice the precision of movement, geometric symmetry, and music complement. Latin/English Missal in hand: go...

I watched a Mass presided over by Bishop Vitus Huonder. He was attended by two Swiss Guardsmen. The bishop (b. 1942) resides in an SSPX house, continues to say the Latin Mass, and sees tradition as the only means by which the Church will be renewed.

The Withdrawal of the Decree of Excommunication of the SSPX occurred in 2009 (French language) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLkOAAGTOew

In a private meeting today, Nancy Pelosi met FO, F for flaming, O for out, and received communion at St. Peter’s.

Her bishop had told her not to present herself for communion, yet FO has blithely swept the bishop to the side.

FO is self-destructing and so are his sucklings. Already I have rebuked him. Any further statements about him are futile.

Bishop Schneider of Kazakhstan said we are entering the passion of the Church, and I would add the recusancy.

On the Roman Pontiff, an extract from St. Robert Bellarmine [1542-1621], De Romano Pontifice, lib. II, cap. 30. -

“Therefore, the true opinion is the fifth, according to which the Pope who is manifestly a heretic ceases by himself to be Pope and head, in the same way as he ceases to be a Christian and a member of the body of the Church; and for this reason he can be judged and punished by the Church. This is the opinion of all the ancient Fathers, who teach that manifest heretics immediately lose all jurisdiction, and outstandingly that of St. Cyprian (lib. 4, epist. 2) who speaks as follows of Novatian, who was Pope [i.e., antipope] in the schism which occurred during the pontificate of St. Cornelius: ‘He would not be able to retain the episcopate [i.e., of Rome], and, if he was made bishop before, he separated himself from the body of those who were, like him, bishops, and from the unity of the Church.’”

I might concentrate on Catholicism in its historical, traditional form going forward and little else. I think I can give math a Catholic angle. Everything else from that point of view is easy.

There are three women of history I would listen to: Catherine of Siena (d. 1380), the young militant, Joan of Arc (d. 1431), and Teresa of Avila (d. 1582). They were the type of women Our Lord could run to and, at the same time, they had intellectual power. Some women religious today have little intellectual power, but they got a thirst for that other kind of power, that which belongs to the (1) pagan priestess, (2) godless politicianess, (3) television prophetess, (4) wishful-thinking COE bishopess. In my circle are a few lay women who are neither thirsty for power nor timid, and T, C, and J would find brothers/sisters -in-arms here. The world is not pink blossoms.

Latin spin-off

The original song is from Arctic Monkeys, “Do I Wanna Know?” (2013). I don’t know whether to endorse this spin-off or not. The poster has a variety of interests, and Latin is surely one of them. Is it for holy purposes? I have no idea. The original is about a love affair that is not so good, but he keeps crawling back.

I think the video is a nod to Roman poets before medieval minstrels took over. The classical pronunciation is first-rate. The guys taking part in the video almost amount to Latin scholars, and hip-high ones. I had to rewind many times to read the Latin.
I looked up “summat”, which is British for “something”. Repto. I crawl (like a reptile). X out the live caption if it pops up.

I remember that my brother loved that word estne so much he said it all the time. Translated - is it or do you? He heard it in class a lot. I think the way he meant it was, do you understand?? He answered for us: No! Tom was the alpha. Did he want his brother and sisters crawling back to him?

English – part of speech: adjective; origin: Latin; usage: mainly literary; meaning: loud, reverberating, and often melancholic; example: “While the slow, melodious pace of an erhu and the occasional beating of a Chinese drum provided a plangent accompaniment to the sad song, she wept for her distant lover.” Latin – infinitive form: plangere; meaning: to beat (not as in beating a human)

We have very good singers and musicians at St. Stephen the First Martyr, Sacramento, CA. Go to the Latin category and the post dated 4/27/2022 to hear them and a classical piece arranged by our seminarian, Jacob Kasak, FSSP. His last name is a palindrome.

Here’s the squared total of my apologetics. Got anything better to offer than Monday Night Football; perfect health; a PhD; a pet; a prestigious position; a beer-filled tummy; a flat tummy; a winning lottery ticket; a sand castle; a summer picnic; a flawless, proportional face or body worthy of the Golden Ratio … eternal life.

A lad of about 30 served Mass alongside Alexander, age eight, last Sunday. I do not know this man, but he stood in the confession line with me. I did not know he was making his confession to be ready to serve. By happenstance, this video became the right moment to speak about him. Update: I was told that our parish now has 110 altar boys.

A Sister’s Reputation

When I was eleven, a boy bullied me. One day, he followed me home. It was after school, around 3:30. Kathy, four years older than I, saw it. I managed to get into the basement, and she asked, “Is he bothering you?”

“Yes,” I said.

“Do you want me to tell him to leave you alone?”

“Yes.”

Kathy, the tough white girl, got rid of him for good.

Someday I will tell how she earned that reputation, which made me and my brother exceedingly valiant.

My father was at work at the time. He did not see what happened. However, he must have been aware. He arranged boxing lessons for me. I did not want to take boxing lessons, but I consented. I consented to everything he said. The same week lessons were to start, the dentist became an interventionist. He said, “Bobby needs braces.”

Now, looking back on it, boxing lessons would have been a good thing.

penance

6/26/2022

I hear various Catholics on the internet constantly talking about penance, no offense to anyone. I never thought I did any arduous penance. When a certain priest gave me a week-long penance, I did it. On the last day, as I was driving to church, I said, “God, just get me there.” Now, I know better. I spent 50 years in the modernist Church. That was penance! Moses only spent 40 years in the desert.

Video from a man in his early 20s, Generation Z. I am seeing an ever-growing number of videos like this one from generations after me. Joan is in there twice. Congratulations to Gen Z for recognizing what my pathetic, boomers generation does not. Am I biased in their favor? Completely. It is no coincidence that already I have posted some of the paintings and clips in my blog. Deus vult - God wills it.

Note: an actual exorcism of a person is attempted inside a Catholic church, but not in front of an audience as depicted, and is led by a team that is led by a priest reciting The Catholic Roman Rite of Exorcism word-for-word. See several YouTube interviews of Fathers Vincent Lampert or Gary Thomas explaining the Rite of Major Exorcism.

There are no words to describe a teacher who badgers.

I use free stuff on the internet all the time: YouTube, Wikipedia, Quora, Kahn, IXL, NASA, The Poetry Foundation, Britannica, thesaurus.com, wordgenius.com, dictionaries, school websites, and advice from writers, and more, and I download pdf's. No tutored students have to buy anything, with one exception: test prep books. If they cannot, I make copies (expensive). Almost every student is told not to use Wikipedia, and no explanations are given by anyone in the stuffy establishment.

The stench of arrogance in love with itself more than children/young adults is rising. He is an example of what schools turn out these days. When I saw the video, imagine the impolite words that came out of my mouth.
