A Sister’s Reputation When I was eleven, a boy bullied me. One day, he followed me home. It was after school, around 3:30. Kathy, four years older than I, saw it. I managed to get into the basement, and she asked, “Is he bothering you?”
“Yes,” I said. “Do you want me to tell him to leave you alone?” “Yes.” Kathy, the tough white girl, got rid of him for good. Someday I will tell how she earned that reputation, which made me and my brother exceedingly valiant. My father was at work at the time. He did not see what happened. However, he must have been aware. He arranged boxing lessons for me. I did not want to take boxing lessons, but I consented. I consented to everything he said. The same week lessons were to start, the dentist became an interventionist. He said, “Bobby needs braces.” Now, looking back on it, boxing lessons would have been a good thing.
