When I was young, we made fun of Oakies. They spoke African American Vernacular English (AAVE). My family will deny the ridicule, but it happened. Oakies were white people from the South. Listen to Amala explain below. There are 23 standard English pronouns. I tutored hundreds of children, and all used standard English for school essay writing, speech writing, admissions essays, vocabulary building, grammar, syntax, poetry, and short stories. A regional novel or short story could contain AAVE. Huckleberry Finn is an example. Standard English is what one needs to succeed, and Amala agrees. Note 1: When writing Pretty City Murder, there was some dialog between two Hispanic thugs. My editor said I could not fake it, so the dialog was thrown into the “never to be seen again” pile. Note 2: When I subbed at a predominantly black school in San Francisco, the school counselor came to my classroom at my request to restore order, and I think he was speaking AAVE. I couldn’t reproduce his scolding if I tried.
