One sees the priest lift the pall and place it back on the chalice several times. The word “pall” comes from pallium (Latin for cloak). A pall is a stiffened square card covered with white linen, usually embroidered. Its purpose is to keep dust/insects from falling onto or into the Eucharistic
elements. Symbolically, it represents the pall over a coffin.
The crucified Christ was wrapped in white linen.
Mass can be said on a battlefield, and do his vestments not look like armor with all the girding and wrapping of his body and chastity? He can say Mass alone or with thousands present. A priest at St. Stephen lifts the host and chalice extremely slowly, giving us time to savor life.
