I have two recurring dreams.
In the first, I have something, maybe love, in my hands and suddenly it escapes, causing me to run in every direction. The second exemplum is the one I want to write about briefly. I had it again last night. The gist is that I suffer rejection from my own people. Details are not important, but if retold, one would understand how disturbing they are. Rather, I will explain the meaning. Our Lord suffered rejection from His own people. Three stood at the foot of the cross: the mother, the Madeleine, and the Apostle John. Several other women stood nearby, including Mary of Clopas. The Jewish leaders had handed Him over to Pilate, all the other apostles had run away, and even though Jesus had performed many witnessed miracles, the people had rejected Him. Many Catholics don’t get it. They and others might say, “How sad, or you need a therapist, or meditate, or do yoga, or accept yourself, or find peace, or seek closure, or explore nature.” Yikes! How dumb. Accept the cross. I keep a record of my thoughts and experiences in this blog. Perhaps, one person will benefit. Below is the untilled garden He provided. Evil-doers have climbed the mountain for a year now, and they look down upon us. Have I been chastened? In confession, yes. I post to console myself and others who feel downtrodden by events. Five years ago, Robert Borba was at a shopping center to buy dog food and heard a woman yelling in the parking lot. Robert got on his horse and chased a man riding away on a 10-speed, all caught on camera. Robert’s horse had never been run on asphalt. He lassoed the thief, which took him off the bicycle, and then lassoed him again. Police were called, and the thief was arrested. The Latin word fictus means “to form” and is the root for fiction, which is formed in the imagination. Today, I learned a new Latin phrase, in caritāte non ficta – in charity unfeigned. Unfeigned means sincere. I have been searching for a way to describe the insincere charity of numerous commercials. Now I have it. Commercials are designed to sell us something, not boast of charity, and when I see a boast, I will say to myself, “in caritāte ficta.”

I gave Altan (13) five minutes to write a response to a photo of playing cards and 18 writing prompts I had sent him. This is the prompt he chose: You’re walking through Times Square in New York City, and a fortune teller hands you this photo. What happens next?
Here is what he wrote: I am rushing to my job in Times Square. I am just about to arrive when a weird person dressed as a genie hands me a piece of paper. It has a picture of a bunch of scattered playing cards, and I think casino. I think nothing more about it until after I get off work. I remembered that the person was a fortune teller. I got worried. I thought, “On no, I will become a gambling addict. The first thing to do is call my mom.” “Hey, mom,” I said, “something bad in my life might happen, and I might become a gambling addict. I am going to stay away from casinos for the rest of my life.” “Okay. Stay safe.” I started making plans. This is a great piece of fast writing. Altan wrote nothing about the job, as if the job were unimportant, and focused on the incident, as if it were monumental. He told me that if given more time, he would have written the rest of the story. Here is what I wrote: Elvira, the fortune teller, sat at her sidewalk table, a bunch of orange carts piled on top of each other, and beckoned me with her dark eyes. I didn’t want to get close and smell her dirty clothes. Something drew me to her. She held up a photo of playing cards. I am a recovering gambling addict. That was what drew me to her. Devil's advocate was once an actual position in the Catholic Church.
“The term ‘devil’s advocate’ is a familiar label for someone who argues a position they don’t agree with just to make a point, but its origins are more literal than you might expect. In 1587, Pope Sixtus V established the position of advocatus diaboli, or ‘devil’s advocate,’ as part of the process of beatification or canonization — aka becoming a saint. The devil’s advocate was the church’s skeptic, picking apart stories of reported ‘miracles’ and more to argue against someone’s sainthood. The advocate had to be present for any part of the sainthood process to be considered valid. If you have ever wondered how many tries it would take to guess a four-digit PIN at an automated teller machine, here is the answer and how it is calculated. We are trying to arrange the numbers. There are 10 numbers to arrange, zero to nine. There are only four spaces, or slots, for each number. In the first space, place a 10 because there are 10 numbers; in the second space, place a nine; in the third space, place an eight; and in the fourth space, place a seven. Multiply 10 times nine times eight times seven. The total number of all such possible passcodes is 10∗9∗8∗7=5040. Following is a demonstration of the solution. The difference between the demonstration and four-digit PIN guessing is that we have 10 numbers to choose from, not four letters, as in the demonstration. Note that 0! = 1. A parishioner told me there are many women who, silently and without any recognition or pay, take care of St. Stephen the First Martyr Catholic Church, like the women who met Jesus along the Way of the Cross. They arrange the flowers, clean, starch, and iron the linens, replace the candles, and dust all surfaces.
