Evelyn Waugh 1903-1966 Author of Brideshead Revisited On an occasion when Waugh was very rude, his hostess remonstrated, “How can you behave so badly – and you a Catholic!” Waugh replied: “You have no idea how much nastier I would be if I was not a Catholic. Without supernatural aid I would hardly be a human being.” I think he knew something about some of us all. I have a very good male friend who is a believing, traditional Catholic like me. He said recently, “I’m very screwed up.” Instantly, he entered my circle of intimates. Why? Because I’m very screwed up. James Arthur O'Connor 1792-1841
