I recommend three French Art House films: The Diary of a Country Priest (1951), The Dialogue of the Carmelites (1960), and Léon Morin, Priest (1961). They have English subtitles. Dialogue is set during the French Revolution and stars Alida Valli, and the other two are contemporary or almost contemporary. If you like movies set in San Francisco, I recommend The House on Telegraph Hill (1951), a murder mystery starring Valentina Cortese. Telegraph gave me the idea for a switcheroo in Pretty City Murder.
