One similar exemple that really works: lmagine the forthcoming Olympic Winter Games in Peking, the downhill race: An Austrian wins the Gold Medal, the next the Silver one, but then two finish ex aequo and therefor both are awarded the Bronze Medal, the fourth rank then is omitted, the count continues with the ranks five, six, etc.
Then a sports newspaper's headline could look like this:
FOUR AUSTRIANS AMONG THE FIRST THREE

ex aequo - equally placed - brilliant, Joe
I will pass this one on to my students. One is learning Latin words that are prefixes and roots in English, like aequo, meaning "I equalize," which is good to know for math, too.
