The word “invention” derives from the Latin inventiō, first person singular of invenīre, a combination of the preposition in and the verb venire, meaning “to come in” or “to come upon”. Today we celebrate St. Stephen the First Martyr, the saint for whom my parish church is named. The Roman Missal, p 1139: quia ejus Inventiónem celebrámus, “for we celebrate the finding of him”.
