I see this little jaunt as a metaphor for the Church: loudmouth humans in the distance and a leader cat and its loyal followers, who are called a brood when on land.

„Auch in Brehms Naturgeschichte
Fehlt's nicht an Barmherzigkeit",
so German author and one of the world's first cartoon artists Wilhelm Busch wrote in a poem about a female dog that took care of the kittens of a cat that had been shot by a wood officer ("Also in the realm of nature one can find misericordia" - and Brehm was a famous German zoologist).
