In 1996, a team of scientists led by David McKay of NASA’s Johnson Space Flight Center announced that they had discovered evidence for microscopic fossil life in a meteorite that came from Mars. Recovered in Antarctica, the meteorite is labeled Martian meteorite ALH84001.
