I would like to see us stop speaking of "the poor." People are poor or rich or somewhere in between. Referring to "the poor" portrays them as lepers. They are not. It can be anyone and is. This request applies to the pope, too. He left his comfortable family life at 19 and entered the Society of Jesus and has been taken care of ever since. He never had to worry about rent. Perhaps, I am not speaking as Jesus speaks, but I can add my experience to His. A known theme in literature is, "Circumstances Excuse Immorality." When a person must make a choice between what is moral and what will pay the rent, necessities take precedence. If one cannot understand that, one has never been poor.

It is interesting to note that it was Judas who mentioned "the poor" to whom the money would have been better given when Mary Magdalene wasted lavishly expensive massage oil for the emotional wellness of Our Lord. If someone sees parallels to what is happening today he or she might not be wrong...

What Judas said I have heard repeated often by my contemporaries who were never poor.
