Porziuncola chapels

I did a little research and discovered that there are seven re-creations of the Porziuncola in the US. Portiuncola means “small portion of land” and was first mentioned in a document from 1045, now in the archives of the Assisi Cathedral.

• Assumption BVM Province of Franciscan Friars, Burlington, WI, replica built 1940
• Lourdes University, Sylvania, OH
• Church of the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, San Francisco, CA, replica built 2008, 78% scale copy of the original chapel, replaced a gymnasium in the North Beach District, entrance on Columbus Avenue.

San Francisco is Saint Francis in Spanish. Academy of Art students painted a Giotto-like mural on a wall outside the chapel. Angela Alioto put up more than $1 million and got big donations from arts patron Dede Wilsey, Nancy Cline of Cline Cellars, and Elisa Stephens, president of San Francisco’s Academy of Art University. Elisa’s son graduated Stuart Hall HS.
