I just assigned Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s 1961 short story, "Harrison Bergeron." People in Harrison's world are punished for excelling in anything on their own. With an amazing ability, Vonnegut predicted what 2081 would be like, but he didn't realize that his dystopian vision would arrive much sooner.
2021 Rather than thumping for learning, hard work, and persistence, the Woke culture wants equity of outcomes, which means skipping traditional factors to success and doing whatever is necessary for underachievers to become just as successful at reaching a goal as those who worked hard. How is equity of outcomes imposed? Lower the academic standards; make university admissions favorable to those with lower scores; hold achievers back through lack of advanced course offerings; bring slow learners up and hold excelling learners back, which ends in the creation of a homogenous, middle-level learning experience to be imposed on all. The New York Post editorial board recently summed up the newspaper's position on the [federal] administration's seeming push for woke culture vs. equality: "The 'equity' approach assumes that any outcome that doesn't meet inane racial quotas is the result of bias. Liberals used to call (rightly) for equality of opportunity - to have every American treated the same before the law. 'Equity' demands equal outcomes. If some group of Americans is doing better than another, no matter the reason, government must fix it."
